What is Astragalus tea

Astragalus, also called radix astragali, is a general term for both plants and traditional Chinese medicinal materials. Plant astragalus originates from Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Gansu, Heilongjiang and other places, being a third-grade state protected plant. As a traditional Chinese medicinal material, astragalus refers to roots of leguminous herbaceous plant, Mongolia astragalus and astragalus membranaceus, which has medical effects on invigorating vital energy for strengthening superficies, disinhibiting water and diminishing swelling, expelling toxin and pus and promoting granulation. Astragalus has been used as a medicinal material for over 2000 years, and contains saponin, saccharose, polysaccharide, amino acids, folic acid and multiple microelements including selenium, zinc and cuprum according to modern researches, all of which gain it medical effects on strengthening body immunity, protecting liver, inducing urine, delaying aging, fighting against stress, lowering blood pressure and fighting against various bacteria. However, there are also solid evidences proving that it can cause wind pathogen symptoms, vital energy stagnation and damp obstruction, indigestion, ulcer or heat toxin after ulcer, and people suffering yin deficiency and yang excess (yin and yang are the two opposing principles in nature in traditional Chinese medicine, the former feminine and negative and the latter masculine and positive) shall not use any.

How to use

  1. Take 5-10g astragalus, brew with boiled water for 10-20 minutes, and drink as tea every day. It can be repeatedly brewed.
  2. Take about 30g astragalus, decoct with water and use every day, or use it as tea after being decocted with water. Decocting 30g astragalus and 15g fructus lycii with water has better effects for people suffering weakness of vital energy and blood.
  3. Take about 50g astragalus and decoct. Astragalus rice and porridge cooked with decocted infusion also have great benefits.
  4. Some prefer to add some astragalus while cooking meat, chicken and duck, for it has excellent medical effects on nourishing body.

Medical effects

It has medical effects on benefiting vital energy and raising yang, strengthening exterior and reducing sweat, inducing diuresis and alleviating edema, expelling toxin and promoting granulation. It can also be used for medical treatment on internal injury and overstrain, splenasthenic diarrhea, lung vacuity cough, rectocele, hysteroptosis, hematemesis, hematochezia, uterine bleeding, spontaneous perspiration, night sweat, edema, blood arthralgia, ulcer difficult to cure or long-time ulcer and all symptoms of vital energy deficiency and anaemia.
